There’s something uniquely unsettling about security footage tied to unsolved crimes. It’s real life, frozen in grainy frames, showing ordinary settings and routine moments right before something horrible happens. A figure moves through a hallway where no one should be. A brief conversation turns deadly. A person walks out of frame and is never seen again.
Video evidence is supposed to bring answers. In some cases, it captures moments so eerie that they stay with you, disturbing in their quiet, unstoppable unfolding.

Below are seven true crime cases where chilling footage captures moments connected to disappearances and murders that remain unsolved. The videos do not just document events, they leave behind haunting questions, blurred faces, unexplained behavior, and suspects who seem to slip away as easily as they pass through the camera’s view.

Missy Bevers
Missy Bevers was murdered inside a church in Midlothian, Texas in April 2016, just before she was scheduled to lead an early-morning fitness class. There were no witnesses inside the building at the time.
Church security cameras captured a person dressed in tactical gear moving through the halls in the minutes before the attack. The footage shows the individual checking doors, opening rooms, and walking calmly through the space. Their gait, posture, gender, and even the way they open doors have been intensely scrutinized and debated.
Investigators believe the person in the footage is Missy’s killer, but it’s hotly debated whether they entered the church intending to commit a burglary or act of vandalism and encountered Missy unexpectedly, or whether they knew she would be there and arrived with the intent to kill.
The footage is chilling and unfortunately has not led to a resolution.

Liz Barraza
In January 2019, 29-year-old Liz Barraza was setting up a yard sale in the driveway of her Tomball, Texas home when a vehicle pulled up in front of the house. It was still early in the morning, and Liz was alone, arranging items and preparing for the day. When the driver exited the vehicle, nothing about the encounter initially appeared urgent or threatening.
Home surveillance footage from a nearby residence captured what happened next. The person approaches Liz and speaks with her briefly, the interaction seemingly calm and conversational. Moments later, without any visible struggle or warning, the individual pulls out a gun and shoots Liz multiple times before returning to the vehicle and driving away.
The footage clearly shows the suspect’s clothing, movements, and the vehicle involved, yet no arrest has been made. Investigators have never publicly confirmed a motive, and it remains unclear whether Liz was targeted specifically or why. The video is especially disturbing because of how ordinary the moment feels until it suddenly isn’t, a quiet morning interrupted by an act of violence that remains unexplained.

Scott Ratigan
On January 17, 2020, Scott Ratigan was found dead in the Ballston, Virginia apartment he shared with his sister. It was a Friday, and Scott had taken the day off from work. That evening, his sister returned home with visiting friends. After hours passed with no response to calls or messages, concern grew, and they entered his bedroom to find him dead.
During the 911 call, someone reported that the apartment smelled strongly of bleach, suggesting a possible cleanup. Scott’s death was later ruled a homicide caused by upper-body trauma, though authorities released few specifics about what occurred.
Nearly a year later, police released surveillance footage taken from nearby businesses, of a “person of interest,” they were hoping to identify and speak with. The video shows a figure dressed entirely in black walking through the area around the time of the murder. The person wears a face covering and appears to have taken steps to conceal identifying details, with parts of their backpack and shoes covered with tape. Among those following the case, the figure became known as “the man in black.”
The footage does not place the individual inside Scott’s apartment complex, and there is no confirmation they were involved in the crime. The person has never been identified, and whether the video shows a crucial lead or an unrelated passerby remains unresolved.

Shanquella Robinson
This case is a bit different from the others in this post. While a suspect has been identified and video footage exists, justice has not been served, and the exact circumstances of her death remain unresolved.
In October 2022, 25-year-old Shanquella Robinson traveled to San José del Cabo, Mexico, with a group of friends, staying at a rented villa. On the morning of October 29, a physical altercation between Shanquella and one of her travel companions, Daejhanae Jackson, was captured on video. The footage is deeply unsettling, showing a real, violent confrontation.
Later that day, Shanquella was found barely conscious in the villa with visible injuries, including a knot on her forehead and a broken blood vessel in her eye. She was pronounced dead after emergency medical care. Friends initially claimed her death was due to alcohol poisoning, while Mexican authorities later determined that spinal cord and neck injuries were involved. However, it is not definitively known whether the injuries seen in the video caused her death.
Mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant for Daejhanae Jackson, but the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue federal charges, citing insufficient evidence to establish legal causation between the fight and her death. The family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against members of the travel group, with portions still pending.
While the case is technically partially “resolved” through investigations and a named suspect, the lack of prosecution and ongoing legal uncertainty means Shanquella’s family has yet to see justice.

Jennifer Kesse
Twenty-four-year-old Jennifer Kesse disappeared from her Orlando condominium in January 2006. She had returned from a weekend trip the day before and spoke with her boyfriend shortly before going to bed. The next morning, she failed to call or text before work, something she never missed, and she did not show up for an important meeting. By midday, her family knew something was wrong.
Inside her condo, it appeared Jennifer had been getting ready for work. Her shower had been used, clothes were laid out, and there were no signs of forced entry or a struggle. Her purse, phone, keys, and car were missing.
Two days later, Jennifer’s car was found abandoned at a nearby apartment complex. Low–frame rate surveillance video captured an unidentified person parking the vehicle, sitting inside briefly, and then walking away. In one of the most infamous moments in true crime video history, fence posts obscure the individual’s face in every usable frame. The person has never been identified.
The footage remains haunting because it appears to come within inches of an answer, only to stop just short.

Trevor Deely
In the early hours of December 8, 2000, 22-year-old Trevor Deely disappeared in Dublin after attending his work Christmas party. A citywide taxi strike meant he would have to walk home in heavy rain. Before leaving the city center, he stopped at his office to retrieve an umbrella. CCTV footage shows that in the minutes before Trevor arrived, an unidentified man dressed in dark clothing was lingering outside the rear entrance of the building in the pouring rain, seemingly with no clear reason to be there. The man then briefly speaks with Trevor just before he enters the building. He has never been identified and remains one of the most puzzling elements in the case.
Later footage captures Trevor walking along Haddington Road toward home. This is the last confirmed sighting of him. Shortly after he passes a Bank of Ireland ATM, another person appears on the same camera walking in the same direction. That individual was once the subject of speculation but has since been identified and ruled out by investigators.
Trevor’s whereabouts remain unknown. Despite ongoing investigation, enhanced CCTV analysis, and repeated public appeals for information, no clear explanation has emerged about what happened after that final sighting.

Lars Mittank
In July 2014, 28-year-old German tourist Lars Mittank disappeared in Varna, Bulgaria under circumstances that remain mysterious. Lars had traveled with friends to the Golden Sands resort and suffered a jaw and ear injury after a dispute at a bar. A doctor advised him not to fly home immediately, so his friends left without him.
While alone, Lars began exhibiting erratic and paranoid behavior, reportedly telling his mother that people were trying to harm him and urging her to cancel his credit cards.
On July 8, 2014, Lars went to Varna Airport intending to return to Germany. After speaking with an airport doctor, he panicked, abandoned his belongings, and fled. CCTV captured him sprinting through the terminal, pushing through glass doors, and running across the parking area before climbing a fence and disappearing into nearby fields and forest — the last confirmed footage of him.
Theories about his behavior vary, including effects from his injury or genuine fear, but no trace of Lars has ever been found.
