Summer is almost here, and I’m already looking forward to all the best summer things: backyard BBQs, outdoor movie nights, fireflies, lake days, pool afternoons, and long warm evenings that seem to stretch on forever.
But then again, this is Eerie Escapes, so summer brings a few other things to mind too: shark attacks, summer camp slashers, sinister resorts, cruise ship killers, and pristine paradise beaches that are not at all what they seem.
And really, what better way to get a strong dose of the scary during the hot, humid days of summer than through one of summer’s own greatest traditions: the summer beach read.
You know the kind. The carefully selected, much-anticipated, probably bought the hardcover to tuck inside your beach bag, magical, delicious summer page-turner you’ve been saving for the sand.
But not every summer read has to be light. It doesn’t have to be romantic, sun-drenched, full of family drama, angsty coming of age, or exactly what it seems on the surface. Summer can be dark too.
So this year, when you curl up in a hammock, stretch out on a warm beach, settle into a cabin, or crawl into a tent after dark, consider bringing one of these with you.
These are some of the best scary summer reads of all time.

Before We Lauch…
Just a word on what went into selecting this list: these aren’t light beach reads with a spooky twist. They’re scary books that feel especially right for summer because they take place during the season, unfold in summery settings, or turn vacation spaces into nightmares. Think beaches, islands, lakes, summer camps, resorts, coastal towns, cruise ships, and hot, humid places where something dangerous is waiting just beneath the surface.

Final Thoughts
The best summer reads are the ones you can sink into completely, the kind of books that make you forget where you are for a few hours. These just happen to trade sunny relaxation for sharks, haunted beaches, isolated islands, sinister camps, and vacation plans gone horribly wrong.
So pack the sunscreen, find a shady spot, and maybe stay out of the water until you’ve finished Jaws..
